Regeneration Resistors
Product Description
Regeneration Resistors are a necessity on all horizontal motion (bridge/trolley/monorail) applied Variable Speed drives. Regeneration Resistors on PE® drives are not required on the majority of hoists with Weston type style INTERNAL load brakes – this is another unique feature of PE® drives on hoist applications. Smart-Move® drives and the CX™ model size a2 and a2d (up to 5HP) have heavy-duty resistor banks built-in as one integrated drive solution. For the larger systems, it is not feasible to place larger resistor wattage inside the electronic enclosure, so a separate resistor bank is required. Hoists without internal mechanical load brakes will utilize a PE® VECTOR SYSTEM specially designed for no-load-brake style HOIST DUTY and use. Refer to the table below for a summary of the applications when regeneration resistors are required.
UNIQUELY DESIGNED FOR CRANE DRIVES
Unlike all other drive types in the market place, the PE® drive line has the unique feature of having the ELECTRONIC portion of the regeneration circuitry built in and integrated into all standard drives, thus giving PE® drives the highest reliability in overhead crane/hoist applications. Also it makes for very simple and quick installation of the drive with no expensive electronics (regeneration or dynamic braking options) required. All that is needed in addition to the drive, are the specially designed “touch safe” external PE® regeneration resistor banks.
It is NOT advisable to use “open-form” resistors on any variable speed drive. Use of open-form “off the shelf” resistors are a hazard to life and property when used with variable speed equipment. High DC Voltages are present, which have the capability of being life-threatening, even for a short period of time after the main power has been removed from a control panel. Use PE® resistor banks for highest reliability and safety.
Call PE® today to match the appropriate resistor size and part number to your application.
Regeneration Resistor Selection Guide
Application Description | Is a Regeneration Resistor required? |
---|---|
Traverse Motion (E.g., Bridge, Trolley, Monorail, Conveyor) | YES. PE drives 5HP and under include a built in resistor (Class D). For applications with motor sizes over 5HP, or applications that require a higher rating higher than Class D, a separate travel resistor bank is required. Use the tables below to select the appropriate travel resistor model number. |
Hoist/Lifting Motion (WITH Mechanical Load Brake, or a locking worm gear). | In most applications, NO.* |
Hoist/Lifting Motion (WITHOUT a mechanical load brake) | YES. An appropriately-sized Hoist-Duty resistor bank is required. Use the tables below to select the appropriate hoist resistor model number. |
PE® Resistor Bank Model Numbers and Sizes
Use the Tables below to find the models numbers and sizes of the PE® resistor for your application. MAKE SURE that the resistor model number has the same number combination as your VFD model number. (Ex: For a M2546CXR drive, the correct resistors will start with R2546.)208-230 VAC Resistor Banks (click to expand)
